Methyl isodehydroacetate (MDHA) is a fossil fuel that can be used as an industrial chemical and a molecular probe. It has been shown to have tumor-inhibiting properties and to be toxic to cells in culture. The cycloaromatization of MDHA yields methyl cyclohexanone, which exhibits optical activity and is therefore an effective optical probe. In addition, MDHA inhibits the growth of resistant tumor cells. This chemical also has the ability to bind natural products such as terephthalic acid and malic acid, which are found in renewable sources.
