Description

1-Methyl-3-nitroguanidine is a genotoxic compound that can be found in the environment. It induces DNA damage by nitrosation of guanine, which leads to DNA strand breakage and chromosomal aberrations. 1-Methyl-3-nitroguanidine is one of the four carcinogenic nitrosamines that have been identified as causes of cancer in humans. The analytical methods for this compound are complex and include HPLC, GCMS, and LCMS. In addition, 1-methyl-3-nitroguanidine has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria when combined with iron ions. This compound also inhibits the production of antimicrobial peptides from wheat leaves and has minimal toxicity to mammals at high doses. 1-Methyl-3-nitroguanidine is stable under neutral pH conditions but reacts with anhydrous sodium to form sodium nitrite ion, which is more reactive than its precursor.
