Methyl D-(-)-4-hydroxy-phenylglycInate is a naturally occurring amino acid. It is synthesized from the reaction of acetone and glyoxal in the presence of a catalyst, such as titanium dioxide. The product can be isolated by precipitation with methanol. Methyl D-(-)-4-hydroxy-phenylglycInate is an intermediate in the synthesis of β-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillin and cephalosporin. This compound has been shown to be an active site for hydrolysis of ester bonds, which may be due to its carboxylate group.
Methyl D-(-)-4-hydroxy-phenylglycInate has been found to have antibiotic activity against bacteria such as Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with reduced potency against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtil
