2-Methyleneglutaronitrile is a diazonium salt that can be used as a reactive chemical. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to form an unstable solution of methylene blue, which is then reduced by the addition of solid catalyst and reacted with human serum. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet fully understood, but it has been shown to involve glutamate dehydrogenase. 2-Methyleneglutaronitrile can also react with organic solutions containing fatty acids, such as palm oil, to form a product containing the double bond in the trans configuration. This reaction is known as a transfer reaction.
