5-Mercapto-1,2,3,4-tetrazole-1-methanesulfonic acid is a formaldehyde donor that activates the condensation reaction of hexamethyldisilazane and bromoethane to generate formaldehyde. It has been used as an optimum condition in the synthesis of cefonicid sodium salt. 5-Mercapto-1,2,3,4-tetrazole-1-methanesulfonic acid also acts as a chloride acceptor for the formation of ammonium hydroxide. This chemical is usually used as a chain transfer agent with iodomethane to synthesize N-(5'-mercaptotetrazolium)benzene sulfonate, which can be used for the detection of potassium ions.
