It is used as a solvent for alkylation reactions catalyzed by ionic liquids. 1-Methyl-7-nitro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro quinoline can be prepared by nitrating methyl 7 nitrobenzoate with nitric acid in the presence of acetic acid and heating the mixture to produce 1 methyl 7 nitro 1,2,3,4 tetrahydroquinoline. This reaction requires a catalyst such as oxalic acid or zinc chloride.
