Mastoparan is a protein that belongs to the tachylectin family. It induces apoptosis by binding to receptor guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) and activating signal pathways. Mastoparan has been shown to induce apoptosis in human leukemia HL-60 cells, as well as in other cancer cell lines. This protein also interacts with the α subunit of G protein and activates camp levels, which leads to increased cytosolic Ca2+ levels. The water vapor molecule may play an important role in the activity of mastoparan. Furthermore, mastoparan has been shown to have anti-infective properties against bacteria and fungi.
