4-Methoxyphenacyl chloride is an activated ester that undergoes a chemical reaction with an acid to form a diketone. The structure activity relationship of this compound has been studied in sunscreens. 4-Methoxyphenacyl chloride can react with phosphorus pentachloride and phosphine to give the corresponding phosphine oxide and dienone, respectively. It also reacts with acetonitrile to form the corresponding methyl ketones. This compound can be used in the debromination of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as carbon tetrachloride or dichloromethane.
