6-Methyl-2,4-dihydroxyquinoline is a potent antagonist of the M1 (μ-opioid) and M2 (ω-opioid) receptors. It has been shown to inhibit the stimulatory effect of morphine at μ and κ opioid receptors in simulations using micromolar concentrations. 6-Methyl-2,4-dihydroxyquinoline also has a stimulatory effect on its own without any activation of the receptor. This compound has been shown to act as an agonist at the δ opioid receptor by stimulating pathways that are associated with pain relief. 6-Methyl-2,4-dihydroxyquinoline can be used in molecular docking experiments to discover new strategies for developing analgesics. 6MDQ also binds to neuropeptides and inhibits their activity, which may be due to its ability to reduce the synthesis of aldehydes, which serve as substrates for these peptides.
