2-(Methylsulfanyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a chemical compound that is the reaction product of trifluoroacetic acid and methylthio peroxide. It is used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. 2-(Methylsulfanyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce an unstable intermediate that decomposes to form a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and sulfur dioxide. The rate of reaction increases with the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The yield of this reaction increases with increasing temperature and decreasing pH. The use of this reagent in organic syntheses can be hazardous due to its potential for explosions.
