Methyltributylammonium chloride is a glycol ether that has strong solubility in water and is also soluble in methanol. It has been shown to have transport properties for metal hydroxides, such as aluminum hydroxide, beryllium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide. Methyltributylammonium chloride was shown to inhibit the uptake of ATP-dependent substrates by the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) transporter in a model system. This compound is also an excellent substrate for mitochondrial membrane potential and facilitates ATP production. It can be used to study the effects of glycol ethers on lipid bilayers and membranes.
