2-Methylanisole is a hydroxy substituted aromatic compound that has the molecular formula CH3C6H4OH. It also contains two methoxy substituents. 2-Methylanisole can be synthesized by acylation of phenol with chloroformic acid in the presence of a base catalyst. The product is then subjected to a Friedel-Crafts reaction and sulfonation to produce 2-methylanisole. This compound has been used as an intermediate for other organic syntheses, such as the synthesis of dodecanedioic acid. 2-Methylanisole has been shown to have hydronium ions present in its structure, which may account for its ionization technique behavior.
