Methyl 2-oxo-1-pyrrolidineacetate (MOP) is an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. It is used as a calibration standard in the determination of inhibition activity. MOP has been shown to be able to inhibit the flow rate in cerebral synapses, which may be due to its ability to bind with choline and acetylcholine. This compound has been shown to have regulatory effects on synaptic function, by preventing the release of acetylcholine from presynaptic cells.
