5-Methylfuran-3(2H)-one is an efficient polyketide that inhibits the cyclooxygenase and the oxidase enzyme, which are responsible for the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins and leukotrienes. It also inhibits xanthine oxidoreductase, which catalyzes the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. The 5-methylfuran-3(2H)-one was isolated from a fruiting body of Inonotus obliquus (Chaga mushroom) in the late 1980s. This compound has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cox-2, one of two major enzymes involved in inflammation.
5-Methylfuran-3(2H)-one is a potential candidate for developing inhibitors for cox-2 as it is not only more potent than other known inhibitors but also more selective because it
