Z-D-methionine is a protease inhibitor that prevents the breakdown of proteins by enzymes called proteases. It blocks the activity of cathepsin and other proteases, which are necessary for the breakdown of proteins in biological systems. Z-D-methionine has been shown to be able to inhibit osteoclast activity in humans and to prevent the cleavage of protein substrates by these enzymes. This drug has also been shown to have analogues with potential use as anti-cancer drugs.
