Z-N-methyl-L-alanine (ZMAA) is a small molecule that has been shown to have the potential to inhibit the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in cells. ZMAA has been shown to have effects on locomotor activity and also has a role in regulating cell proliferation. This compound is capable of binding to DNA and inhibiting transcription, as well as having an effect on cellular growth. ZMAA can be used for the treatment of congenital amaurosis, which is a form of blindness that occurs at birth and results from defects in retinal development. The mechanism of action for this drug is not yet known but it is speculated that it may act by preventing excessive cell division or by suppressing the production of inflammatory cytokines.
