Z-N-methyl-L-valine is an amino acid synthesized by the enzyme anthranilate synthase. It is a precursor to the antibiotic erythromycin and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in cell-free extracts. This metabolite can be used as a chromophore for enzymatic reactions, such as those catalyzed by hydroxylases and oxidases, which are involved in the biosynthesis of other amino acids (e.g., tyrosine).
