S-4-Methoxybenzyl-L-cysteine is a sulfoxide that is used in peptide synthesis. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics. Sulfoxides are synthesized by reacting a thioether with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of cystinyl. The yield of this reaction can be increased by using N,N'-disubstituted carbonyl compounds as the starting material.
