N-α-Z-N-α-Methyl-L-phenylalanine is a synthetic amino acid that is used in peptide synthesis. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase, which converts tyrosine to L-DOPA. The methylation of this compound produces a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, one of which is more potent than the other. The more potent enantiomer exhibits inhibitory effects on the enzymes that catalyze protein synthesis and can be used for research purposes to study protein synthesis in cells.
