N-Methyl-alpha-aminoisobutyric acid hydrochloride (MAIB) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for the production of prostaglandins. MAIB has been shown to be effective against some tumors and is used as a diagnostic agent for imaging tumor cells. It also blocks the uptake and transport of amino acids in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, which may inhibit adipogenesis. MAIB has been shown to have specific effects on carcinoma cells, but not normal cells. It has also been found to be active against maternal blood cells and may be used for diagnosis or treatment of such diseases as leukemia or lymphoma.
