4-Methoxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid is a synthetic compound that is prepared by the ammonolysis of 4-methoxy-2-nitrobenzoyl chloride. It has industrial applications in the production of thiabendazole and biphenyl. This agent has potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and also inhibits fungal growth. The antimicrobial properties of this compound are due to its ability to inhibit bacterial chemotaxis, which is mediated through the inhibition of protein synthesis at the ribosome level. 4-Methoxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid also inhibits microglia proliferation in vitro, suggesting it may have therapeutic use for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
