1-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-indazole is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It binds to the 16S ribosomal RNA, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. The 1-methyl form has been shown to be effective against gram-negative bacteria, while the 5-nitro form is active against gram-positive bacteria. The nitro group on this molecule can alkylate DNA, which may lead to crosslinking with other bases in the DNA strand. This may lead to a red shift in its absorption spectrum due to an increase in conjugation length. 1-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-indazole has also been shown to produce fluorescence due to its solvatochromic properties.
