4-(2-Methoxy-ethoxy)phenol is a chemical compound that is used as a label for peptides in proteomics. It has two amino groups, one of which is the n-terminal amino group and the other of which is the epsilon amino group. The n-terminal amino group can be labeled with a variety of compounds, including isotopes. Labeling with stable isotopes, such as deuterium oxide, is useful for fingerprinting proteins by mass spectrometry. 4-(2-Methoxy-ethoxy)phenol can also be labeled with reactive chemicals to modify lysine residues or other labile sites on proteins. This labeling strategy has been used to study protein function in proteomics.
