5-Methoxyoxindole is an oxindole derivative that can be synthesized from 5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, by binding to DNA and preventing transcription. The reaction mechanism may involve the formation of a chlorinated intermediate (5-chlorooxindole) that can react with a second molecule of 5-methoxyindole in the presence of hydrogen chloride. This reaction results in the formation of 5-methoxyoxindole and hydrochloric acid. Acylation at the 4 position leads to compounds such as 4-(3′,4′,5′-trimethoxybenzoyl)oxindole and 4-[3′,4′,5′-trimethoxyphenylacetyl]oxindole. Acidification of these compounds leads to nucleophilic displacement reactions
