DL-alpha-Methyltyrosine is an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase, which is the enzyme responsible for synthesizing fatty acids. DL-alpha-Methyltyrosine has been shown to cause neuronal death in rats and inhibition of locomotor activity by decreasing dopamine levels in the brain. It also inhibits estradiol benzoate binding to estrogen receptors and blocks the receptors from activating gene transcription. Sublethal doses of DL-alpha-Methyltyrosine have been shown to inhibit dopamine receptor activity, leading to increased locomotor activity. The drug's inhibitory properties can be reversed with a monoamine neurotransmitter, such as L-DOPA or 5-hydroxytryptophan.
