Methyl green is a dye and a surfactant that is used in wastewater treatment. It is also used as an indicator for bowel disease, as it stains the bowel with a blue-green color. Methyl green has been shown to adsorb to the surface of polymorphonuclear leucocytes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which are used to measure the amount of surfactant on the cells. Methyl green has antimicrobial activity against aerobacter aerogenes and clinical pathology, but not against langmuir adsorption isotherm or solid phase microextraction.
Methyl green binds to biological samples such as bacterial cells and plate tests in a similar manner, which may be due to its effects on cell morphology or the environment of the cell membrane.
