Description:
1-Methyl-1H-benzimidazol-5-ol is a heterocyclic compound that has antiviral properties. It is a potent inhibitor of viral replication and has been shown to be active against the influenza virus. This compound also inhibits the activity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reverse transcriptase, which is an enzyme that plays a key role in HIV replication, and it can inhibit the synthesis of DNA. 1-Methyl-1H-benzimidazol-5-ol has also been shown to be effective against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2). The mechanism through which this compound functions is not yet known, but it may act by inhibiting the initiation of transcription or by preventing the translocation of RNA polymerase II on the DNA template.
