Product Information
- 2-?-Tolyloxy-propionic acid
2-(4-Methylphenoxy)propionic acid is a solvent that is used for the esterification of phenols with alcohols. It has been used in the synthesis of herbicides and pharmaceuticals. 2-(4-Methylphenoxy)propionic acid can be synthesized from methyl phenol and propionic anhydride to form a mixture of cis and trans 2-(4-methylphenoxy)propionate. The cis enantiomer exhibits high enantioselectivity, while the trans enantiomer does not exhibit any selectivity. This chemical can be synthesized in organic solvents such as ether or isopropyl, which are substituted by electron donating or electron withdrawing groups on the phenol substituent. These substituent effects will determine whether the reaction proceeds through an E1 or E2 mechanism.
