Methyl 3-cyanobenzoate is an organic compound that is a precursor to the anti-cancer drug ataluren. It is synthesized from terephthalic acid by ammonolysis and subsequent treatment with methyl chloride in an organic solvent. The reaction product of the ammonolysis was purified by silica column chromatography, followed by crystallization from methanol. This process resulted in the formation of a white solid that was identified as methyl 3-cyanobenzoate. Methyl 3-cyanobenzoate has been shown to have anti-tumor activity against human cancer cells in vitro, but not yet tested in vivo. In addition, it can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of methyl 4-cyanobenzoate using dehydration reactions.
