Methyl 4-(4-bromophenyl)-2,4-dioxobutanoate is a chemical that has an antibacterial activity. It is the sodium salt of methyl 4-(4-bromophenyl)-2,4-dioxobutanoate and is anhydrous and soluble in water. Methyl 4-(4-bromophenyl)-2,4-dioxobutanoate inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with the bacterial cell wall synthesis. This chemical also inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. The mechanism of action on bacteria is unknown but may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of enzymes that are necessary for forming a cell wall or synthesizing proteins.
