1-Methyl-2-formylbenzimidazole is a crystalline solid that has an x-ray diffraction pattern with the same type of symmetry as the 1,3,5-triazine ring. This substance is one of three enantiomers (1R, 2S, 3S) and has been shown to have anticancer activity. The 1-methyl and 2-methyl groups on this molecule react with hydrochloric acid to form a series of reaction intermediates and products. The amide bond in this compound is formed by a stepwise process that begins with the formation of an imine intermediate. 1-Methyl-2-formylbenzimidazole can be used to inhibit the growth of Trichomonas vaginalis and Triflic acid can be used to induce mitochondrial membrane potential collapse in this organism. X-ray structures have been determined for both racemic and meso forms of this compound.
