6-Methyl-5-nitro-2(1H)-pyridinone is a nitropyridine. It is an analog of pentachloronitrobenzene, which is found in soil and water. It can be synthesized by the reaction of acetal with phosphorus pentachloride. 6-Methyl-5-nitro-2(1H)-pyridinone can also be produced by the chlorinating of nitrite with sodium nitrite, or by the oxychlorination of acetaldehyde with phosphorus oxychloride. This compound is used in catalysis to convert enamines into imines.
