6-Methoxy-chroman-3-carboxylic acid is a synthetic, ammonium salt that is used in the treatment of glaucoma. It inhibits the production of aqueous humor by binding to the enzyme acidolysis, which converts 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) to 5'-adenosine monophosphate (AMP). The drug also has an inhibitory effect on spinal protein kinase and can be used in the treatment of certain types of spinal cord injuries. 6-Methoxy-chroman-3-carboxylic acid binds to the active site of protein kinase, thereby preventing ATP from binding and inhibiting phosphorylation. This prevents activation of this enzyme and blocks cell division. The compound also acts as an optical isomer, which can be recrystallized or crystallized with acetonitrile.
