5-Methyloxazole-4-carboxylic acid is a pentafluorophenyl oxazole, which can be synthesized by coupling a pentafluorophenyl thiazole with an oxazole. This natural product has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. The synthesis of the 5-methyloxazole-4-carboxylic acid is catalyzed by palladium and zinc chloride in the presence of methyl formate, giving an intermediate that can undergo linear macrocyclisation to produce the desired product. The deprotection reaction is accomplished using sodium hydroxide in methanol, forming the desired anhydride.
