It has been synthesized by Friedel-Crafts acylation of 2,4-dimethylbenzoyl chloride with methanol and sodium methoxide. 2-Methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid can be used in conjunction with butyllithium to form conjugates with metal ions such as copper, iron, uranium, nickel, and zinc. This compound is an isomer of 2-methoxybenzoic acid. It has been used for the synthesis of alizarin and thermally stable homologues.
