Description:
4-Methyl-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to inhibit the production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and other inflammatory mediators in the cell-based assay. It inhibits LPS-induced TNF-α, but not IL-1β, suggesting a selective inhibition of TNF-α. 4-Methyl-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine also shows potent inhibition against collagenase activity in activated mutant strains of type II collagen. The molecule produces optical changes when it binds to DNA, which may be due to its ability to form cationic hydrogen bonds with phosphate groups in DNA.
