2-Methyl-6-nitrobenzothiazole is an electron-withdrawing group that can be used as a probe to monitor the permeability of cell membranes. It is known to react with nucleophiles such as piperidine in a nucleophilic ring opening reaction. 2-Methyl-6-nitrobenzothiazole has been shown to have a linear response when monitoring the fluorescence of cells. This probe is not stable in acidic environments, and will lose its fluorescence if it comes into contact with an acidic solution. 2-Methyl-6-nitrobenzothiazole can also be used as a fluorescent stain for electron microscopy.
