1-Methyl-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile is a pyridine compound that reacts with methyl propiolate in the presence of hydrazine to form an enantiomeric mixture of 3-cyanoindoles. The nitrile group is then reduced to an amine group by reaction with dimethylsulfoxide and sodium borohydride. 1-Methyl-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile can be used as a reagent in x-ray crystallography.
