5-(2-Methylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol is a drug that is used in the treatment of tuberculosis. The 5-(2-methylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol molecule is a disulfide with two thiol groups and one oxadiazole group. It has been shown to be effective against tuberculosis by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This prevents the enzymes from maintaining the integrity of bacterial DNA and causes cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 5-(2-Methylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol also binds to potassium hydroxide as well as chloride ions and elemental sulfur. It has been shown to have a molecular weight of 214.5 daltons in elemental analyses and an absorption spectrum at 400 nm with a maximum at 420
