2-Methyl-2-hexenoic acid is a carboxylate that is reversibly adsorbed to primary amines. It has been shown that 2-methyl-2-hexenoic acid interacts with cinchonidine and can be used for the treatment of hypertension. 2-Methyl-2-hexenoic acid is also postulated to be able to interact with hydroxyl groups in an acid molecule and form hydrogen bonds. The functional theory is based on the premise that the vibrational energy of a molecule is proportional to its kinetic energy and its ability to form hydrogen bonds. Functional groups are considered important because they provide stability, solubility, and chemical reactivity to a compound.
