1-Methylcyclopentene is a reactive molecule that is metabolized to s-phenylmercapturic acid. This compound has been shown to be an elimination reaction product of the metabolism of fatty acids and isomers. 1-Methylcyclopentene has also been shown to have an effect on heart disease by increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. It may also cause oxidative stress in humans, which may lead to atherosclerosis. Chemical analyses show that 1-methylcyclopentene reacts with oxygen to form aldehydes, such as acrolein, which can react with cholesterol to form lipid peroxides. These reactions are catalyzed by enzymes such as cytochrome P450 or monooxygenases. Kinetic studies show that 1-methylcyclopentene has an activation energy of 51 kcal/mol at room temperature and 298 K (25°C).
