(4S,5S)-(-)-4-Methoxymethyl-2-methyl-5-phenyl-2-oxazoline is a hydroxy group with a carboxylic group. It is used in the preparation of esters and orthoesters. This compound can be synthesized by methylating (4S,5S)-(-)-4-methoxybenzaldehyde with methanol and sodium methoxide, followed by cyclocondensation with phenylacetone in the presence of polyphosphoric acid. The product is then hydrolyzed to give (4S,5S)-(-)-4-methoxymethyl-2-methyl-5-phenyloxazoline. The diastereomers are separated using preparative methods that include crystallization or column chromatography.
