2-Methylthiophene is a copper complex that has been studied by vibrational spectroscopy. The molecule has been shown to have an aromatic hydrocarbon group, which is the source of its low energy and stability. 2-Methylthiophene can be used as a reactive intermediate for transfer reactions or as a test compound in kinetic studies. The reaction mechanism for 2-methylthiophene is not well understood but it has been proposed that the reaction proceeds via radical intermediates and involves both nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution. The reaction products for this compound are not known, but it is believed that the structural formula would be CHSCHCHSCH. Anhydrous sodium reacts with 2-methylthiophene to produce sodium sulfide, which can then react with water to produce hydrogen sulfide gas.
