6-Methoxy-9H-purine is an analog of adenosine and has been shown to have anticancer activity in vivo. It inhibits the growth of virus by binding to the viral DNA polymerase, thereby inhibiting viral replication. 6-Methoxy-9H-purine has also been shown to be active against cancer cells that are resistant to other anticancer agents, such as herpes simplex virus. The drug is currently undergoing toxicity studies in rats and dogs. 6-Methoxy-9H-purine can be administered orally or by intravitreal injection. Intravitreal injection is a method where the drug is injected into the eye through a needle. This route of administration may reduce systemic toxicity because it leaves less drug in the bloodstream.
