Product Information
Metoprolol succinate is a β-adrenergic receptor blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Metoprolol succinate can be formulated into tablets, capsules, or liquid for oral administration. It is also available as an aerosol for topical use. The solubility of metoprolol succinate in water is low, so it must be dissolved in other liquids such as ethanol or polyethylene glycol before administration. Impurities may occur during the manufacturing process, which can result in a loss of potency and quality. In order to prevent this from happening, impurities are removed using phase chromatography and validation techniques. Metoprolol tartrate impurity M has been found to reduce the efficiency of hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HIC) while increasing the retention time on HIC. This impurity was not detected in any batches of metoprolol tartrate during pharmacopoeia validation testing.
