Millettone is a novel dipterocarpane alkaloid with insecticidal activity that belongs to the genus of millettosin. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on Leishmania and cancer cells. Millettone has also been shown to be effective against a variety of other insects, including some species of mosquitoes and flies. This compound contains two fatty acid chains, one hydroxyl group, two methoxy groups, and two prenyl groups. The molecule is composed of a prenyl-prenyl-methoxy-hydroxy fatty acid chain system. Radiation induced mutations in the DNA of bacteria have been studied using this compound as a probe for its ability to bind to nucleic acids. This binding prevents the unwinding of DNA helices during replication or transcription, which leads to cell death.
