Product Information
3-Methylisothiazole-5-carboxylic acid is an alkyl derivative of pyridine. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in water. The compound hydrolyzes to form 3-methylisothiazole and acetic acid, with the cuprous cyanide acting as a catalyst. This reaction can be done in either benzene or chloroform as the solvent. 3-Methylisothiazole-5-carboxylic acid can also be synthesized by reacting an olefinic compound (such as ethylene) with phthaloyl chloride, followed by methylation of the resulting isothiazoles with methyl iodide. The reactant then undergoes a series of reactions to produce the desired product: chlorination, substitution, hydrogenation, and finally hydrolysis. 3-Methylisothiazole-5-carboxylic acid has
