Mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl)phthalate (MEHP), also known as 2-ethylhexyl phthalate, is a metabolite of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP). MEHP is found in urine samples and has been detected in human plasma, serum, and breast milk. The human metabolism of MEHP is not well understood. However, it has been observed to be metabolized by conjugation with glutathione or glucuronide to form mono(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate glucuronide or mono(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate sulfate. The health effects of MEHP are not fully understood. Studies have shown that exposure to MEHP can lead to insulin resistance in humans and may affect fertility. Further research is needed on the effects of MEHP on humans.
