Malantide is a plant alkaloid that has been shown to inhibit glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) activity, which is involved in regulating the levels of cyclic AMP. Malantide also binds to the carboxy terminal of the alpha subunit of myosin, inhibiting its phosphorylation and preventing contraction of cardiac muscle. Furthermore, malantide can inhibit the release of reactive oxygen species from heart tissue extract and has been shown to be an effective pharmacological agent for treating ventricular myocardium.
