Product Information

Name:
b-MSH, human
Synonyms:
  • Beta-Msh, Human
  • H-Ala-Glu-Lys-Lys-Asp-Glu-Gly-Pro-Tyr-Arg-Met-Glu-His-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly-Ser-Pro-Pro-Lys-Asp-OH
Description:

The human c-terminal fragment of the beta-MSH peptide hormone is a diagnostic marker for adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) excess. It has been found to be elevated in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in patients with Cushing's syndrome. The n-terminal fragment of beta-MSH has been shown to regulate skin pigmentation, which may be due to its inhibitory effects on melanocyte proliferation. Beta-MSH is also secreted by the pituitary gland and regulates ACTH release from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland as well as regulating other hormones, such as cortisol. Beta-MSH may have a role in regulating pathophysiology associated with Cushing's syndrome, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus type II, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease.
